Dealing with Depression

Depression is one of the most commonly reported conditions in the world today, affecting millions of men and women daily.

You might find yourself falling into depression if you're experiencing the following symptoms:

  • A depressed mood throughout the day
  • Constant fatigue
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • An inability to concentrate
  • Insomnia and other sleeping issues
  • Significant change in your weight and appetite
  • Recurring thoughts of death or despair

Fortunately, there are a few ways to get through this mood.

Diet and Exercise: Depression can be linked to a chemical imbalance in your body, so it's important to keep your body in good shape. A healthy diet of low carbohydrates and high protein is essential to improving your body's energy and stamina throughout the day. A regular exercise routine can also provide an endorphin release that will keep you focused and alert throughout the day. Healthier eating and exercise can also help you sleep better at night.

Stay Organized: Keeping to a daily schedule or routine might not seem like an advantage for handling depression, but having regular activities can do a lot for your overall mood. Consistent work and other activities can result in a clear mind and a more positive attitude.

Make Time for Friends and Fun: One of the best ways to counter depression is to do what you enjoy. Even if you aren't feeling up to it, making a commitment to something you like (such as going to the movies or playing a musical instrument) can be the first step to overcoming your mood. You should also make time with your friends. Having people who care about you and can make you feel better about yourself is essential. Not everyone can through depression all by themselves.

Seek Counseling: If you feel that your depression is truly severe, you may want to seek out a therapist or psychiatrist for counsel. Medical professionals can provide alternative treatments, such as weekly therapeutic sessions and medication.
